I was looking at the mixed reviews from the new 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor when I fell over another great offer on a 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor. They are really dropping in prize after the D700 FX launch. I think I’m gonna stay with DX for a long time to come so I jumped to it.
It’s a big chunk in the bag but on the other hand a very convenient zoom-range combined with the fixed f/2.8 throughout the zoom range – I am confident it’s a better buy than the new VRII consumer grade and I will try to stick with this one for a while this time around.

Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G
Fell over a fantastic deal for this legendary workhorse I couldn’t resist even though it’s overlapping the 17-35mm and I had previously considered it too big and expensive.
I have not been disappointed. It is as sharp as they say and color reproduction is wonderful. Also the zoom range is very useful for general usage.
After some consideration I decided it was too much having this and the 17-35mm so I sold the 17-55mm off.
